Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race on wheels!
Press Release

A world record has been achieved by the support crew travelling in specially adapted Toyota Hiluxs modified by Arctic Trucks and used on the Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race . The four Toyota Hiluxs have completed a trip of over 5000km from Novo, a Russian Scientific Station in Antarctica to the Geographic South Pole and back again, making them the first 4x4s to reach the South Pole. The return journey of 2500km from the South Pole to Novo Station was completed in a record 8 days and 17 hours.

South Pole by car! © www.amundsenomega3southpolerace.com

The arduous route to and from the Pole included extremely hostile terrain, travelling through crevasse fields and mountains, and an unusually high amount of snowfall where temperatures plummeted below -40C still air, and -60C with wind chill. Arctic Truck's Driver-mechanics Gísli Jónsson and Hjalti Vigfús Hjaltason were on hand to provide constant modifications during the trip.

The team were greeted at Novo station with cheers, flares and champagne to celebrate the success of the expedition. Tony Martin commented "It is an incredible achievement, we are breaking boundaries here, no one has ever completed a trip like this before, we are making history".

They hope this trip will open a brand new method of travel in Antarctica, encouraging people to use 4x4s as an alternative to current methods of transport as they are cleaner, and 5 times more fuel efficient than other vehicles presently used.

March 2 2009

The MVP Health Care Frigid Infliction is a ten hour adventure race for teams of two or three on Saturday, March 7th, 2009. The race will feature several winter disciplines as well as requiring you to continually navigate.

The organization use an accelerated cutoff system which allows them to really challenge experienced teams while providing a great race for the first timers. If you have never done an adventure race before, this is the perfect one to start with. This was the first adventure race for about a third of the participants the past three years, so don't be intimidated!

Teams do not need support crews for this event. Outside of what is provided by the race organizers, teams must be self-sufficient. This is an adventure, after all!

Team Missing Link win the South Pole Race
News Release

Team Missing Link (Rune Malterud and Stian Aker) have won the Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race . The Norwegian pair crossed the line and arrived at the Geographic South Pole at 7pm on Jan 21st, completing the race 770km in 17 days and 11 hours.

Watching the team cross was a historic and momentous occasion, they linked arms held high in the air as they walked to the Pole and planted a Norwegian flag. They stopped at the Pole and talked about their tremendous journey, the difficulties they have faced and their joy and pride at arriving at the Pole.

The Norwegians have once again won the race to the South Pole, the first since Scott and Amundsen. Missing Link wanted to commend QinetiQ for making it a fantastic race. After all their hard work Missing Link will now ge5t to spend some time at the Pole, resting, relaxing, eating and enjoying being at the Top of the Bottom of the World!

Team QinetiQ of the UK (TV presenter Ben Fogle, Olympic Gold Medallist James Cracknell and 24 year old Ed. Coats) finished the next day in second position. The team were delighted to be at the Geographic South Pole. After a 70km push into the Pole the team were exhausted and suffering with blisters and little bits of frost nip, but all in good spirits and looking forward to some R and R. Missing Link were at the Pole to shake their hand for completing such a fantastic journey.

Team Danske Bank reached the pole on the 24th to finished 3rd, arriving at 17:00, 20 days and 9 hours after departing from the Start Line. QinetiQ and Missing Link were all standing at the pole cheering them on over the finish line. They helped them take their pulks back, gave them hot drinks and sweet treats, and put up their tents for them for a good night's rest. All are well, enjoying finally resting and not having to ski tomorrow.

Due South have had a difficult couple of days on the run in to the Pole with two members suffering from flu, but they stayed on their skis covering the distance and are now on their final leg, hoping to finish today.

Race Positions
1st Team Missing Link
2nd Team Qinetiq
3rd Team Danske Bank
4th 696km Team Due South (they have not travelled as far as south pole flag but they are closer to the pole than south pole flag)
5th 705km Team South Pole Flag
6th South Pole Team Southern Lights

Falco polaco route on the Aconcagua © fieldtouring.com

Congratulations to the Canadian Expedition for Vitae Foundation that succeed in climbing the highest peak in South America, the Aconcagua at 6962 meters!

Four members of the expedition team made it successfully to the summit. Patrick Bertrand, Mario Soulard, Xavier Breton and Daniel Klink were very happy and proud to see the summit but had to come down after only a few minutes because of bad weather. Talking of bad weather, 4 climbers paid with their life the ascension of the Aconcagua in the last weeks.

The team is now coming back to Mendosa to rest before they return to Canada next week.

Races to the South Pole

For those who like the cold, there is now 2 races to choose from in Antarctica. For those who think that the Antarctic Ice Marathon & 100k is not enough, there's the Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race . The Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race, to the far end of the earth, will be the first race to the South Pole since Scott and Amundsen’s historic race nearly 100 years ago. Roald Amundsen arrived on Dec. 1911, Robert Scott on Jan. 17 1912. Affter almost two weeks of intensive Polar Training in Antarctica coving approximately 100 nautical miles, teams of 3 will set off across the Antarctic Plateau to race 430 nautical miles across the largest ice cap in the world to the Geographic South Pole.

The racers will face constant challenges throughout their journey: surving in temperatures as low as -50C, navigating and skiing while pulling a 70Kg. pulk (sled), climbing up to 9300 ft. to the South Pole and through everything working together as a team.

The South Pole Race, to the far end of the earth, will be the first race to the South Pole since Scott and Amundsen’s historic race nearly 100 years ago. Roald Amundsen arrived on Dec. 1911, Robert Scott on Jan. 17 1912.

The Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race promises to be an awe-inspiring event. All competitors will receive extensive and first rate logistical, safety, media and administrational support provided by South Pole Race.

Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race is more than just a race. It is the journey of a lifetime. This is an opportunity to live your dreams and push beyond the limits of your imagination

At this time, almost half of the fleet sailed around the mythic Cape Horn. The French Michel Desjoyaux is leading this spectacular race with a mere 4386 nautical miles to go! He is currently 246 miles ahead of Roland Jourdain, also from France. Note the excellent perfomance of Samantha Davies on Roxy that is currently 4th after 67 days of intense sailing.

Advices on how to get to Blanc-Sablon

There are many ways to get to Blanc-Sablon. The easy way is to get here by plane. However, there is a second way to get here via Deer Lake (Newfoundland). Many airlines go to Deer Lake Airport (YDF). From there, you can either connect with a local airline to Blanc-Sablon or drive to the St-Barbe-Blanc-Sablon Ferry (3H30 drive). If you choose that option, you should reserve your place on the Ferry at this adress: www.marine-atlantic.ca. For Ferry schedule click here.

March 3rd, 2008

Yet again, Mother Nature gave a perfect day for racing the Frigid Infliction with temps getting into the upper 20s, fresh falling snow. After getting maps and having some time for questions and plotting, teams walked along a dark trail to starting line lit by luminaries. At 5:18, the racers were off - three snowshoe points in any order had the first teams back in just over an hour. From there, 4 cross-country ski points brought them to a crackling fire and smiling Jim who had them start candles for gear-check. One more CP and TA 2 meant a new map and leaving skis behind for an hour or so of post-holing toward the tyrollean traverse. With four ropes (kept tightened :) there weren't many bottlenecks, and most teams got past the challenge without needing assistance. Last but not least, 7 snowshoe points in any order, including a small cave (!) and a smiling family. Finally, the finishline! With a time on course of 7:49, Team Eastern Mountain Sports and EnduranceAventure.com crossed together in 1st place after trading the lead all day. All teams were more than happy to shower, grab some Madhouse Munchies, and wait for dinner and prizes.
